Fender Bender (Shane MacGowan I Love You)

1947-1948 Big Twin Fender, I didn't have the heart to cut up an original so this re-pop came in handy. I’ve seen good and terrible reproduction of these fenders, this is one of the good ones, it’s a 3-piece with spot welded sides and correct width of the braces and rivet heads exactly like the original 47-48 so after a quick massage it’s pretty hard to even tell it’s a repro.

I always wanted to bob the rear fender the classic way, you know have a pint and just ditch the hinge pin and forget about it, go listen to AC/DC or whatever but at the same time I always thought the fender is a bit too long even after the rear flip-up part is gone, so out came the angle grinder. In this pic almost 5" is cut off.

This is an idea I’ve had for quite some time, and even thought I've never seen it I am pretty sure it's been done before. It turned out a bit more complicated than I first thought because the stereo in my garage doesn't have a repeat function and I get nervous if I listen to more than one song when I work so today I had to constantly run over and restart "Curse Of Love" by The Pogues until I was done. And once I cut it up everything came apart and both the top and side pieces had to be stretched to fit. Here’s how much I decided to re-use of the rear hinge bit ...ready to get welded back on.

Done! Here's what the shortened fender looks like finished. To trick the eye and make it look stock I also put two extra rivets on top of the fender, so there are still four rivets on it.

…So, after 6-7 hours of work and listening to "Curse Of Love" this fender is 4.1/2” shorter ...and no one will ever notice except me, so this was actually a pretty stupid idea after all.

Ok, right now Shane sings the last refrain so I got to run back over to the stereo.

Post came today with some old unused Trump cocktail shakers Made In Japan , time for the Grinder & presto my exhaust System is Born , just need to weld them on ,De chrome them & paint them Black , always tough knowing whats going to work , but at the moment i dig these on the Knuck.

No, nor did Falcon Motorcycles...

Strange, then, that creative genius Paul is using one of Falcon's bikes as a representation of his skills on 'Paul Jr Designs' t-shirts, available from his website.

This has to stop.

If you have a Blog, please repost this.

***UPDATE***

Check the Paul Jr Designs webshop... suddenly this design is 'sold out' (in other words removed). Job done... for now.

Reminder: Up for auction October 27 Sotheby's

 Happy bidding!

Because Guy (GK) asked.
This is my buddy Motorcycle Mike's 36 EL Bobber. This thing was sitting on top of an 85 year old guy's junk pile in California! This is the real fuckin' deal. The motor and trans are rebuilt and he put new tires on it, other then that its how it was. Fordson toolbox and everything! I love the hand made dash, front fender on rear, bars risers you name it! This thing is the epitome of the 40's Hollister style bob job and it ain't no replica. Hell it may have been there for the "festivities"...

Back to my desk after a 600 mile roadtrip, shooting stuff for the mag.

Had a great time back in my hometown... thanks Renshaw for the hospitality and letting me ride your FXR. The first Evo I've ever ridden... is that a good thing or not? I'm now a convert.

Great to see the London crew and get to lanesplit in the big smoke again... at least a decade since I've done that.

Also got to hang out with Johnny Morales, a legend and shapeshifter who is blurred in every photo I've ever seen of him (including the ones I took this week). His garage is un-be-liev-able.

Had a good time too with Shaky in Bristol shooting Shu's lovely XS... another enviable garage and lovely tea. Sorry it was a lightning visit mate.

Back to layouts and tax returns.

John Leland & his lecture on "the history of hip" completely miss the relevance of the So. Cal cultural impact.
So. Cal is vast, angry, multicultural, musical, artistically rich & car/bike-centric.
San Francisco is an east coast city on the west coast & Oakland is a midwest city in Cali.
LA & the surrounding area is a unique beast.

In 1927 Louis Goebal opened Jungleland in Thousand Oaks, California, right on the LA/Ventura Co. line.
The pictures in the previous post are of me & my cousins at Jungleland in January of 1969, when I was 2 1/2 years old. It closed in October of that same year.
I delivered the "News Chronicle" to Mr. Goebels front porch & used his overgrown "Hollywood Zoo" as my own personal playground. It was history to me, the fact that Tarzan & Robinhood were filmed there or Jane Mansfield's kid got his arm chewed by a lion, meant nothing me.
It was ours, our turf, hang out, a free skate park.
The Z-Boyz tagged the bowls we skated, perfectly smooth vast undulating tracks of cement, where alligators, sea lions & ducks once ruled.
While surfing may have had a Zen effect on those living in Hawaii or No. Cal, it was mean & territorial in So Cal.
Car Culture & Vatos, Surfing & Skating, Punk Rock & Hollywood, all left a scar on my personality, that makes me relate immediately with a Jason or a Cole.
Is it real or unique, better or special, more clever or neat than any other growing up experience? I think not, but it is mine & when watered down & commercialized by those reminiscing about a past that is not their own for the sake of selling a clothing line, it is surreal & brings out that angry, territorial tendency ingrained in me, since my youth.

All across the town, all across the night
Everybody's driving with full headlights
Black or white turn it on, face the new religion
Everybody's sitting 'round watching television!

I'm up and down the Westway, in an' out the lights
What a great traffic system - it's so bright
I can't think of a better way to spend the night
Than speeding around underneath the yellow lights...

At home recovering.
Will I do it again, I tell you now, "never", in a month, "perhaps", by next year... I'll sign up.
I participated in an event that was a character builder at the very least.
The milage was boring in comparison to the crucible of personalities brewing in the late night hours.
During the day magnetos & hopes were fried.
The night, tantrums & wrenches thrown.
Riders with perfect scores lied & cheated as people with only a few hundred miles clocked proved to be inspiring to all.
Some where flown home under doctor's orders & others let their own poor sportsmanship pay for their flight.
The very same act was performed with perfect nuance by some & total hypocrisy by others.
I'm sure I drove people to near murder with my personality, but I also gained life long friends & fiends.
Among the newly beloved, and only at the very moment I publish this post will I remember the names I neglect, are;
Moe, Steve, Sean, Goose, Eric, Dale, "Bill's daughters", The Jersey Devil, Doug, Dave, Joe, The Motormaids &...
Attention to detail. Check out the "side car" fender light on the front fender, Chrome Hollywood bars, the paint scheme including tool box cover along with various other cool lighting and accessories.

Hit by autumn

Well, then there is this long winter with manic work in the workshops to get ready for summer. Summer is way to short, its allready become autumn with leaves beeing colored in yellow and red.
Realised yesterday I hadnt used my 45" bobjob in several weeks. Time to act, fired up the engine and went up the valleys, crisp air close to cold, just a couple of degrees in the positive direction.
Went by a friend who just have got his ol AMF shuvel back to life, didnt take long to convince him getting of for a test ride.
Later the same evening the temperature came below zero degree C, better get prepeared for another winter.

.

the Basque Country, has been one of our favorite destinations for years. Stuck at the foot of the Pyrenean chain , roads are made of thousands turns, deep green sceneries, it's a real playground for us bikers.
We left for three days with 4 Commandos and a Harley Davidson. Our friend "D" with the Rigid/springer gave us a full ride demonstration. This guy knows his machine. Despite some fears, it has been a "wild" trip, as I love them...

Then we moved to the other side, Navarra another Basque Province in northern Spain. It's amazing to see the climate change, we drove (in the middle of July) across the mountains through fog and rain of a rare density. Abruptly, just after the Border, Sun and high temperature were a big contrast. There we found the best restaurant (Venta) around, with basques specialities like calamari with ink, grilled goat and of course Navarra wine ...
End of story next week.
