Andy Shernoff that is, The Dictators are beyond doubt among the planet's greatest punk rock pioneers, right up there with New York Dolls, Stooges, Dead Boys and Ramones. One time I visited Handsome Dick Manitoba's bar “Manitoba’s” down on Avenue A in New York City. We had been in Tompkins Square Park all day doing things you do in Tompkins Square Park all day. So after it got dark we walked in and I went straight up to the jukebox, it was stuffed with pretty much every great rock 'n roll song known to man.
After a while I noticed “Running Back” by Thin Lizzy, so I put in $20.00 and selected “Running Back” for all of it, now since one song was only 25 cents that equaled “Running Back” 80 times in a row. Needless to say we got thrown out...
One other time I was doing an interview with Andy Shernoff and I asked him which hairdo he favorised, Handsome Dick’s, Rob Tyner’s or Phil Lynott’s? Super lame, I know. He ended the interview right there and we never spoke since. Now even if both Handsome Dick and Andy may hate me I will always love The Dictators.
